Summary of the lesson "Educational Technology" by Prof. Dr. Soner Yıldırım

Learning means the improvement of someone's knowledge, skills and attitudes over time. In addition to that, it's a natural and one of the basic functions of the brain. But, beside being a basic function, learning doesn't occur simply: It occurs after repetition. Hearing or seeing something once is not enough for learning so, learner should repeat time to time, because periodic repetition have a major efrfect on learning process. And also, brain spens most of its energy shile learning, so learning can't occur without energy. I guess this is the reason why elders say, "If you don't eat anything, your head won't work." 

There are three parts of the brain that are localized for learning an each one of them are responsible for something else. First, Hippocampus; it is responsible for learning and memory. Second, Amygdala; it is responsible for emotions and reactiveness. And also it secretes stress hormone. Third and last one is Nucleus Accumbens; it is responsible for pleasure and secreting dopamine. 

As teachers, we should be aware of what learning is, how it occurs and what aee we supposed to dp in order to make it easier for students. For example, shile listening lesson, you may get distracted by so many things. And our students will distracted. In real lide lessons, I think it is so much easier for teachers to draw his/her students attention. Teacher says something fun or tell a history which they would be atracted to, and he/she can draw their attention easily like that. But in online education, it is so complicated and hard to focus for students, because there are a lot of things that could make them distracted. Researches say that university students tend to stop watching videos that longer than 15 minutes so the videos that last 10-15 minutes longer are so much effective for them. But in online education, they have to listen a lecture for like two hours or even more. But it would be better if lessons should be between 15-30 minutes in order to students are able to maintain their concentration and focus more easier.

Besides this, it would be better if you use more visuals than texts. If you prepare presentation try not to put too much text. Becuase visuals tend to be remembered because our brain precesses then faster and easier than texts. Try to use different pictures and colorful things, those will attract them also. So why should we know and use these things? Why should we do lesson design? Necuase there won't be learning without interaction and feelings/senses. And lesson design helps us to have a better interaction with our students and give them most efficient learning process. Also using current tools and materials with lesson design helps us to be more effective.
